Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa opened the TGI Friday’s outlet in Fort last Thursday. The outlet is located in the vicinity of the Dutch Hospital complex, one of the showpiece developments of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) of which Mr Gotabaya is also secretary. The renovated building  the restaurant is placed was part of a UDA project to refurbish old colonial-era buildings in and around Fort’s Chatham street.

Cargills Ceylon, the franchise owners of TGI Friday’s in Sri Lanka announced their plans to open the outlet in June this year.  The group which owns the supermarket chain Cargills Food city and the KFC franchise was severely affected by the retail tax hike which saw the company’s  profits plummet  more than 50% the last year.  The company said in June that the the move to launch TGI Friday’s was to diversify the restaurant side of the business into the entertainment dining segment.

TGI Friday’s chain operates over 900 outlets in more than 60 countries, a list that will now include Sri Lanka.
